Before Your Interview

Over the past few years, I have been an occasional teacher for Waterloo Region. I have to market myself to teachers and principals to find employment. So, I must have an up to date resume, cover letter and be interview ready. In the past 5 years I have attended over 40 interviews, my most recent being Friday April 30, 2010.

In the next few blog entries, I would like to discuss interview preparation, resumes, cover letters and networking. Stay tuned!

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

Prepare, prepare prepare! Research the company and position you have applied for. It is important to know the company's policies, procedures and background. Research the role that you are applying for. If there is not a lot of information to be found ask questions during your interview

Arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes early. If you are early, you have the opportunity to relax, get comfortable in your surroundings and review any notes that you have made.

Relax! Remember to feel comfortable during your interview. Take deep breaths and concentrate on smiling and being polite. Thank the interviewer often for the opportunity.

Dress for success! Men and women should be in professional wear. Black is always in fashion as it is sleek and slimming. Dress appropriately but also comfortably because you will be feeling a bit nervous.

Prepare a portfolio of your great work. Always enter an interview carrying something that you have accomplished in your past. Your portfolio should also have a current resume and cover letter in case the interviewer would like to see a copy. Your portfolio could also contain certificates, memberships and any other documentation that you have achieved.

Questions and Comments. If you have questions about the company or the job that you are applying for do not be afraid to ask! Record the answers if necessary. While answering any questions, you should always try to comment about the company with the knowledge that you have from your research. Impress your interviewer with knowledge of their company.

To Review: Prepare. Be early. Relax and Smile! Dress for success. Prepare a portfolio. Ask questions and comment on their business.
